(Seoul=NSP NEWS AGENCY) = Hanwha Ocean announced on the 10th that it will suspend production at Okpo Shipyard due to an accident that occurred overnight on the 9th. Production will be suspended for 10 days and will resume on the same day after safety training and inspections are completed. The Okpo smelter, where the accident occurred, has had four fatal accidents this year.

According to Hanwha Ocean, at around 10:00 PM on the 9th, Mr. Gu, a worker belonging to a partner company(SEM2), fell while working on a floating dock at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje plant. Mr. Gu was taken to the hospital after receiving emergency treatment immediately after the accident, but died at 11:23 PM.

In a statement released that day, the CEO and executives of Hanwha Ocean said, “We express our condolences to the bereaved families who lost their beloved family members in this unfortunate accident.” They added, “We cannot help but feel sorry towards the workers, the ship owners who trusted Hanwha Ocean with the construction of their ships, the local residents, and the public. We bow our heads in apology.”

The Okpo Shipyard has seen a total of four fatalities this year, including the latest crash. In January, an explosion and unconsciousness killed two workers, and last month, a heat-related death occurred.

The company promised to actively cooperate with the relevant authorities' investigation to thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident and to do its best to reveal the cause of the accident as quickly as possible.
