(Seoul=NSP News Agency) YEON SUN HAN Journalist = SK Telecom take steps becoming a world leader in semiconductor market, which is expected to grow to about 50 trillion won in 2024 by launching the world-class self-developed AI chip for the first time in Korea.

SK Telecom (President Park Jeong-ho) presented the world's best AI semiconductor for data centers developed by own technology at the ‘Korean New Deal, Meet Korea's Artificial Intelligence’ held at KINTEX in Ilsan on the 25th, and revealed its vision for the future of AI semiconductor business.

At the event, SKT unveiled its AI semiconductor called 'SAPEON X220', which can be applied immediately to data centers.

The SAPEON X220 has better performance and lower price than conventional GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). Because SAPEON X220 is 1.5 times faster at deep learning tasks than GPU, its data processing capacity increases by 1.5 times when applied to data centers, while using 20% less power and half the price.

SAPEON X220 can be applied immediately to data centers in various fields, and SKT is planning to carry out AI semiconductor business for various domestic and foreign businesses.

Meanwhile, SKT is also in the process of developing a follow-up semiconductor for the SAPEON X220 through carrying out a national project for the Ministry of Science and Technology, and is expected to begin mass production in 2022.
